Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary
Bentley's custom coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed a unique keycase to celebrate the brand's centenary. It is made of Dark Stained Burr Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it comes with a flying 'B' paperweight, a set keys and a brochure featuring never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre images.

Aesthetics

As you approach a vehicle like the Continental GT W12, its beautiful sculptural design is highlighted by carefully selected lighting.
The Continental GT is the most sophisticated open-top Bentley ever designed. The rear tonneau, for instance, displayed the largest piece of dark-stained, book-matched Burr Walnut veneer ever applied to a production Bentley. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

Design

The Bentley Mulsanne key has a button that opens the trunk and a second button that turns on the car. It also has a switch to activate the parking break. The key is constructed from vegetable tanned leather. It takes more than two days to make each one. It is hand cut to shape, sewn sealed, and polished to produce the highest-quality finish. It is strong small and compact, and it fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is similar with the Volkswagen Phaeton's big car key, but it feels more substantial and premium.
It also has Secure-A-Key which prevents theft of keys that are keyless. The device is placed inside the remote control key fob and stops it after a couple of minutes of inactivity. This prevents thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices that could unlock and start the vehicle.

Bentley says it takes roughly 500 man hours to design and assemble the average Mulsanne. A key to that time-consuming effort is a deliberate refusal to take advantage of modern technology. Instead of using a machine to space the perfectly-matched leather seats workers at the Crewe factory do it by hand. Drivers have to park their cars manually, not using sensors built into the vehicle to direct them to perpendicular and parallel spaces.
The event also saw Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization capabilities by presenting one of a kind - the Mulsanne W.O. The Mulsanne W.O. replacement bentley key pays tribute to founder William Osler Bentley. The limited edition cars include an item key that shows a piece of the 1930 8 Litre crankshaft.
